'Clean coal' company to tour ND lignite facilities

A company that’s currently building what’s been described as a “state of the art” coal fired power plant that captures carbon emissions will be coming to North Dakota – to gauge interest in having that technology in North Dakota.

Southern Company is building that plant in Kemper County, Mississippi. North Dakota Public Service Commission chairman Brian Kalk says company representatives are coming to North Dakota next week to tour the state’s lignite mines and meet with utilities here.

"This is one of the places in the country where they could build a second one of these," said Kalk. "We've got the lignite coal, we have the need for CO2, we have the need for electricity. I'm using my position on the National Coal Council to broker some relationships, set up some meetings with our investor-owned and with our co-ops, and see where that discussion goes."

New EPA rules will require further reductions of carbon emissions – and Kalk says this is one way to keep coal in the mix of power generation.
