Dalrymple: No need for a special session

Governor Dalrymple says he will not call a special Legislative session.

Dalrymple ordered an across the board four percent budget cut to state general fund agencies, as a weak energy and agriculture economy meant lower tax collections.

Democratic Legislative leaders sent Dalrymple a letter, urging him to call lawmakers back to Bismarck, and having them deal with some of the budget issues. But Dalrymple says there’s no need for it.

"We have a plan in place right now that will take us through the end of the year," Dalrymple said. "We will have a balanced budget. We will not have a deficit. And we will take care of the things that need to be taken care of."

In their letter, the Democratic leaders said they were concerned about making sure money for property tax relief will be there.

"We believe that even with the 4.05 percent allotment, we will have enough funds to deal with the property tax relief requirements."

The Democrats were also concerned about human service cuts. But Dalrymple says the affected programs were new, and not yet off the ground – so he sees that as delaying their implementation.
