Democratic leaders in the state Legislature say they believe they have a number of areas where they will be able to work with new Governor Doug Burgum.

The leaders held a news conference shortly after Burgum’s “State of the State” address. Senate Minority Leader Joan Heckaman (D-New Rockford) said Burgum talked about changing times in the state’s K-12 education system, but offered few specifics.

"It is our goal not only to provde an excellent K-12 public education system across the state, " Heckaman told Capitol reporters. "It's also to build a premier pre-K early childhood education system."

House Minority Leader Corey Mock (D-Grand Forks) said he appreciated Burgum’s discussion of expanding addiction treatment – especially in the opioid area.

"We face an opioid crisis that is bigger than any one of us," Mock said. "We need to work together to make sure those needs are met, and that North Dakotans feel they have the resources they need to break addiction and truly live their lives."

The Democrats say they will roll out their policy positions over the next few weeks.
