GFPD establishes "safe trade zone"

Grand Forks Police Department

Grand Forks residents now have a safe place to go to meet and exchange items bought or sold online.

Lieutenant Jeremy Moe says the Grand Forks Police Department has established a "safe trade zone" in the parking lot of the police department. He says the zone located and clearly signed in the west parking lot, and is under 24-hour surveillance. Moe says when doing business online, there is always potential for being taken advantage of - but this zone should eliminate "physical concerns." The Fargo Police Department set up a similar exchange location earlier this summer. Moe says he believes this is something you're going to start seeing in more and more communities.

"This is something that's been going on around the nation - there's a lot of different cities that are providing this location for people to buy and sell on, and it's a trend I think will continue to grow because there's a lot more buying and selling online. There's always safety concerns. And us as a police department - our job is to try and alleviate some of those safety concerns as best we can, and hopefully by establishing that location we can do that."

Moe says the police department is looking forward to seeing the area being used.
