Governor calls out Guard to help with airport security

By Dave Thompson

Bismarck, ND – North Dakota National Guard soldiers will be stationed at North Dakota's eight major airports -- to help with security.

Governor Hoeven says this is being done because President Bush has asked for help -- until airport security can be federalized.

Hoeven says the first soldiers called up have training in civil disturbance control, as well as police work. He says the F-A-A will offer training to other Guard personnel as needed. He says at least two Guardsmen will be at each airport. They'll be dressed in camouflage uniforms and be carrying nine-millimeter pistols. They'll be there when the airport is open. Hoeven says the Guard members will help luggage screeners and supervisors when needed. They'll also help police at airport X-ray machines -- and help to resolve any disputes. Hoeven says they will be in place for at least 30 days.
