GPS-based state mapping 80 percent complete

A statewide project to provide a more accurate base map for 9-1-1 and emergency management is now about 80 percent complete.

"There was a need for better GIS data across the state for emergency management and 9-1-1 services," said Phillip Peterschick, the GIS section chief for the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services. He says the project consists of three layers – a statewide high resolution aerial photography layer, an accurate “road center line” layer, and a structure location layer. A group of counties in southeastern North Dakota – including Cass County – will be working on that final phase starting in August. Petershick says a company called “Geo-Comm” will be doing that work.

"As usual, they like to make sure the public is aware that the serve they're providing is not them just snooping around," said Peterschick. "They're there for a reason. Everyone stands to benefit."

Peterschick says the three layers need to be completed by October 2015. And he says the information will be updated constantly.

The legislature appropriated $3.9 million for the project. To date, $2.6 million has been spent.
