Kennedy Bridge in Grand Forks facing a major rehab project

A major project is scheduled within the next two years for the US Highway Two bridge over the Red River between Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

The bridge is called the Kennedy Bridge.

"There's a pier on the North Dakota side -- the main one that holds the truss up -- that is within an unstable slope area," said North Dakota Department of Transportation bridge management section chief Gary Doerr. "It's moving, inches per year, but it is moving. And the plan is to stabilize the pier or replace it."

Doerr says there are also plans to add a pedestrian walkway to that bridge.

"MinnDOT (Minnesota Department of Transportation) got a bunch of money after the I-35W bridge collapsed," said Doerr. "They had 10 years to spend that money, to work on these big truss bridges. And this is one of the last projects they want to do."

Two other bridges cross the Red River at Grand Forks. One, the Sorlie Bridge, is undergoing some minor work this summer. The other is the Point Bridge.
