Mahoney on fatal officer shooting; "we were profoundly saddened"

In a statement released this morning, Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney says he remains confident that the Fargo-Moorhead community is a safe place for its residents and visitors.

But he says the fatal wounding of Fargo police officer Jason Moszer is "profoundly saddening."

Moszer was shot while setting up a perimeter around a residence near downtown Fargo.  Authorities were responding to a domestic disturbance where shots had been fired.

Mahoney says a tragedy of this magnitude profoundly affects the entire community, and reminds everyone of the daily risks taken by men and women in uniform.

He says the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cass County Sheriff's Office have cordoned off a large area surrounding the crime scene as they conduct their investigation.  He's asking the community for their patience and cooperation as the investigation unfolds.

Jason Moszer was a 2001 graduate of Fargo South High School, and a 2009 graduate of NDSU. He is six year veteran of the Fargo Police Department, and leaves behind his wife and two young children.  He was 33.
