A high school senior from Oakes and the Carrington High School are the winners of the annual North Dakota College and Career Readiness Awards.

The testing group ACT co-sponsors the award.

“We know that’s not an easy task," said ACT vice president for policy, advocacy and government relations Scott Montgomery. "It takes individuals at all levels of the system, from local school districts to community colleges, employers, and a huge state effort by your state leaders to make college and career readiness for all a major tenant of the state.”

State School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says the award shows how the schools, the families and the communities have made a commitment to making sure the students are ready for college and careers.

“We put into place the mechanisms and the network where they can experience success," said Baesler. "And we provided opportunities for them to have the gift of struggle.”

Brittany Roney of Oakes won the student award. She knows struggle – she’s been fighting cancer, but she says she continues to work hard to succeed.

“I try hard in school," said Roney. "I do well in my classes. And I guess I’m just a leader in our school system. I’m always positive. I try to have a smile on my face, and I always want to be somebody that all the students can look up to.”

Roney plans to attend Valley City State University this fall.

It was the second win in a row for Carrington High School. Claire Endres is a senior there. She’s been able to take some cooperative classes in agriculture and health occupations.

“These classes are just going to prepare us more," said Endres. "And without all these programs, I don’t think I could do it all by myself.”

Both winners will advance to a national competition.
