Senator calls it 'real property tax reform'

ND Legislature

A bill is making its way through the Legislature that its sponsor calls “real property tax reform.”

"It's going to change the way folks get notified of a potential property tax increase," said Sen. Dwight Cook (R-Mandan), the bill's sponsor -- and the chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee.

The bill requires all potential property tax increases – whether it be county, schools, park districts or some other taxing entity  -- to be provided to taxpayers on one single form.

"If a school district or some other government is planning to raise taxes, it has to send a letter, saying when and where the public hearing will be held," Cook said. "Now we will consolidate that into one statement that wil come from the county. That'll be the biggest change people will see with property tax. It will make it more transparent, simpler and easier to understand."

It passed unanimously in the state Senate – and will now be considered by the House.
