Some areas in central North Dakota were hit by hail, heavy rain and strong winds last night.
Janine Vining with the National Weather Service in Bismarck said it started about 4:30 yesterday afternoon, with a report of half-inch hail near Mott. She said the hail got bigger after 5:00.
"An inch hail to 1.75 hail was reported near Halliday, in Dunn County, and in Mercer County, as the storm started to develop and got bigger," Vining said.
The winds also strengthened.
"There was a gust around 65 miles an hour in Golden Valley," said Vining. "A few gusts around 72 miles an hour were reported around the Hazen area."
Vining said when the thunderstorm cluster approached Bismarck-Mandan, the hail diminished – but the winds and rain continued. She said it appeared to stay in north Bismarck – because at the airport, only about a third of an inch was recorded.
"I'm sure it varied quite a bit," Vining said. "That's the nature of thunderstorms. You can get heavy downpours in one part of town, and not very far away, you get smaller reports. It packed a lot of rain, that's for sure."
Some areas in Bismarck reported street flooding, and some underpasses were full of water.
