With summer travel ahead, TSA offers tips for flyers

The Memorial Day holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer travel season.

And although most people will be driving, some will fly. And the TSA is offering some helpful hints to get you through airport security without hassle.

"It would be very helpful if your carry-on bag is uncluttered," said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers. "Don't stuff your bag so tight that it's really hard for you to close it, or an officer to get a clear image of it on the x-ray."

Dankers reminds travelers that everyone's personal property will be screened at the checkpoint.

"They want to get a clear view of the bag for your own safety," Dankers said.

Dankers also said items prohibited to be brought with you into the plane’s cabin should be in your checked baggage. She said you can use the “myTSA” app or the Web site, www.tsa.gov/mobile, to see which items are OK, and which should be in your checked bags.

"Our officers take no joy in having to prevent passengers from traveling with these items," Dankers said. "That being said, it is the passenger's responsibility as to what they bring in the bag, and they will be held accountable for what is in the bag."

Dankers said travelers can also apply for “TSA Pre-Check,” which allows them to go through security without having to remove shoes, jackets and belts. She said it costs $85 for a five year authorization.
