"Take Back the Night" Rally Big in Fargo

By Tracy Fugere

Fargo, ND – Over two hundred people marched into Moorhead Tuesday night for the "Take Back the Night" rally to end personal violence. The Rape and Abuse Crisis Center of Fargo-Moorhead sponsored the eleventh annual event.

Cass County State's Attorney Birch Burdick--whose office often deals with victim witness coordination, child support, and domestic violence--says there is no room in the community for domestic abuse.

"Teddy Roosevelt had said the hallmark of any civilized society lies precisely in its ability to do justice. That's what our office is trying to do together with law enforcement and the courts--together with you, your families, and your friends. When we're done here tonight, we ask that you take the message you hear tonight back to your families and your friends. Make it clear to them that there's no room for domestic abuse here--now or ever."

Larina Schneiter of Fargo--one who took part in the rally--says this is the biggest turn-out of people for the event in years. She also says she hopes that generations to come are aware of what's happening and are able to take back the night.

"The events of the past month or so have been hard and I'm happy that so many people are here remembering the other crimes that we're having--that women, men are facing everyday. It just doesn't affect the abused person, it affects the rest of the family. So if you abuse someone or rape somebody, it just doesn't affect that person--it affects everyone that loves them."

This is all part of "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" around the nation.
