UND President releases statement on racially charged photos

The University of North Dakota has completed its investigation into racially charged photos being shared by students on social media platforms.

A statement from UND states that in each incident investigated, it was determined that no state laws were broken and no violations of the UND Code of Student Life were made. The statement said the conclusion was reached by considering the Constitutional right of free speech.

In a separate statement, UND President Mark Kennedy says that while free speech is protected, he "continues to be appalled" about the photos and messages, and that he condemns "the thoughtlessness that led to" the incidents. He says in speaking with student leaders, he understands that these incidents are not isolated on the UND campus. He says he also spoke with student leaders about support services provided by the University to diverse populations, and educational opportunities related to diversity and inclusion. He says next week, UND's Diversity Council will convene to work on best practices to enhance the University's understanding of diversity and inclusion in higher learning, along with a list of recommendations for the campus. He says he is committed to do the work to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment at UND.
