UND presidential search begins

A committee has begun the search for a new president at the University of North Dakota.

Current president Robert Kelley is retiring in January.

Committee members are holding listening sessions on campus – to find out what UND staff and faculty want in a new president.

"I'm really looking for a strong leader," said Jim Poolman of Bismarck, a UND alum and search committee member. "Somebody that is not afraid to shake things up. Somebody that can provide and articulate a message and a vision for the University. Of course, someone with academic credentials. But above all, a great leader."

Poolman says change is always good.

"Looking to the future, and making sure the next president is putting UND in the best possible, competitive position is very important to me," Poolman said.

Poolman says it’s likely a new president would not be on board until at least July first. And some have suggested an interim president be hired. Poolman says that’s the Chancellor’s call.

"As I like to say, that's sort of above my pay grade," said Poolman.
