A group has been formed to look at the potential of taking over the ownership and upkeep of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad bridge between Bismarck and Mandan.

The bridge was opened in 1883. The railroad is looking to build a new bridge, and tear the old one down.

But the group “Friends of the Rail Bridge” is hoping to save it.

"The bridge was here before statehood," said Mark Zimmerman, one of the founders of the group. "The architectural wonder of the bridge, the design and construction, was unique in its time."

BNSF to spend $100 million in ND in 2016

Mar 2, 2016

BNSF Railway is planning to spend $100 million in North Dakota this year.

"It will be focused primarily on maintenance projects," said BNSF spokesperson Amy McBeth. "And those are the things like replacing rail, replacing ties that help us continue to operate safely and reliably."

"We have about 55 miles of rail that will be replaced in the state," McBeth said. "In addition, nearly 240,000 ties will be replaced."

She says this plan reflects the increased capacity it has built in North Dakota over the past several years.

STB holds hearing in Fargo to discuss rail shortage

A backlog in rail shipments in North Dakota has prompted the Federal Surface Transportation Board to host a hearing in Fargo.

Federal, state and local officials provided testimony to the STB to convey just how extensive the rail shortage has become.  Governor Jack Dalrymple says the North Dakota Mill and Elevator has been forced to shut down 25 times due to the backlog of rail orders - which only seems to get longer.
