Event Description

Jackie Owen, M.Ed, M.S, Learning Services Coordinator at Valley City State University, Gifted and Talented Education is needed for some children. Professor Owen will present different definitions of "gifted and talented." She will discuss the characteristics and needs of gifted and talented students, and why gifted education should be a part of school systems. The presentation will be geared towards parents, educators, administrators, and pre-service teachers. Jackie Owen came to VCSU ten years ago after having taught 29 years, in two states, grades K-7. Jackie is a tenured assistant professor in the VCSU Department of Education and Graduate Studies at VCSU, currently serving as the Learning Services Coordinator. She has master's degrees from Utah State University and North Dakota State University. Jackie taught in a graduate program for gifted and talented at the University of California. She has presented at numerous state and regional gifted conferences, several conferences of the National Association for Gifted and Talented, and at three conferences of the World Conference on Gifted and Talented children. She has presented professional development workshops in Fargo, West Fargo, at Oak Grove Lutheran School, and at schools in South Dakota, Utah, and California. She is currently helping to launch the new North Dakota Association for Gifted Children, and is the area contact for the Valley City-Jamestown and surrounding areas. The public is cordially invited All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public.
