Jury Returns Decision of Death

By T.McDonald

Fargo, ND – Three hours into their second day of deliberations a jury in Fargo has called for Alfonso Rodriguez, Junior be sentenced to death for the murder of Dru Sjodin. In November 2003, the 22-year old college student was abducted from a Grand Forks mall parking lot. Her body was found four months later in neighboring northwest Minnesota. U-S Attorney Drew Wrigley was the chief prosecutor in the case...

"...This was a multi-aggravated kidnapping, rape and murder by someone who chose to do what he did to somebody who hadn't done anything but go to the mall and walk to her car."

Rodriguez is a convicted sex offender and was living in the area where the body was found. Since the incident, members of the Sjodin family have become active in the pursuit of stricter laws to monitor registered sex offenders. Sjodin's mother, Linda Walker says the nation needs to show no-tolerance for violence against women or children...

"...Our children are our number one asset and we have to keep that in mind. We have to build a nation where our children feel that they do not have to look over their shoulders and we can't run from the demons anymore that threaten our children."

The sentencing phase of the case will be held in early January. Attorneys for Rodriguez say they will a re-trial in the case, and appeal the ruling if needed.
