Consultant: Personal information was not compromised by hacker

A third party has determined that a breach of a University System computer server did not mean personal information was compromised.

The breach was discovered in early February. Information on more than 290-thousand current and former students, as well as faculty and staff, were in that server. That information included Social Security numbers. The University System says it was an off-shore hacker who got into the system, and used it as a platform for a “phishing expedition.”

At the time, system IT personnel said it didn’t appear that personal information was taken. System IT director Lisa Feldner says a report from the Center for Internet Security, Multi-State Information and Analysis Center, confirms that.

"We saw that the individual compromised the server, and was using it as a hacking device," said Feldner. "But we never did see that they accessed any of the files on the server."

Feldner says the investigation continues.

"The FBI is going to pursue the hackers," said Feldner. "And we're investigating internally to make sure we have all the appropriate controls in place."

Feldner says the University System is still offering free credit repair services to anyone whose name may have been on that server.
