UND law school tuition to be raised -- college says UND still 'toward the bottom' in tuition costs

Tuition at the UND Law School will be going up next semester.

But the University says the Law School is still at or near the bottom of law schools, when it comes to tuition rates.

UND associate vice president for finance Karla Stewart told a subcommittee of the Board of Higher Education the tuition rate at the law school will go up by about 13 percent.

"This brings the per-credit rate to $439, which is the base rate at UND for all graduate programs," Stewart said.

That’s $13,176 per student per year.

But Stewart said it’s still a lot less, compared with other law schools.

"For example, the University of South Dakota's 2018-2019 rate was $18,408," Stewart said. "St. Thomas (MN) is about $41,000. And Hamline, who is also identified as a primary peer institution, is at $43,460 this year."

Stewart said scholarship are available for students who may have trouble meeting that tuition rate.

UND Chief Operating Officer Jed Shivers said because of increased support from the 2019 Legislature, the law school will be able to make some “qualitative improvements” that will continue to make the school attractive to students.
