North Dakota drivers who want the new Real ID Driver’s License have until Oct. 1, 2021 to get it.
That deadline was moved from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Currently, we have 36 percent of North Dakota drivers and ID holders who have the Real ID," said North Dakota Department of Transportation Drivers' License Director Brad Schaffer. He said North Dakota is an "opt in" state, so it may not get 100 percent of drivers with Real ID.
"Right now, we're at a 70 percent rate of people that are coming in and getting the Real ID," Schaffer said. "So we're picking up some steam now."
Schaffer said in Jaunary and February, DOT will start pushing Real ID again.
"With the COVID stuff, we backed off," Scahffer said.
Scahffer said if you want to board a plane, for expample, you will need a Real ID, or a passport, a military ID or a tribal ID, after Oct. 1, 2021.
"To get a Real ID, you need your birth certificate, a marriage license, if your name has changed, you need a proof of Social Security, and two documents that prove your resident address," Schaffer said. "Most commonly, that would be a utility bill, or a lease agreement, or a proprty tax statement."
Schaffer said there is a list of other allowable documents on the Department's Website.
Schaffer said you have to make an appointment to appear in person to get your first Real ID. He said it will take about 10 minutes. And after that, Schaffer said you can renew it on-line.
