Sen. Erin Oban will not seek re-election

Another veteran state Senator has announced she is not running for re-election.

District 35 Sen. Erin Oban (D-Bismarck) made the announcement on her Facebook page.

"I've decided to take a step back," Oban said in an interview with Prairie Public. "I think the climate in politics has degraded our ability to have serious conversations about real issues. I feel impatient in watching it happen."

Oban was first elected in 2014. She said when she started in the Legislature, she expected to have thick skin. She said she can handle criticism and accountability.

Oban said it is an important – and serious – job that Legislators have.

"And to not take that job seriously is where I feel we've gotten in the Senate," Oban said. "We're just willing to pass things because it's easier than telling people no, or disappointing a really loud and engaged group of people."

Oban said she feels like she's losing her ability to be respectful.

"Respect is something that I value," Oban said. "If I can't do it, I need to step back from it."

Earlier, Sen. Nicole Poolman (R-Bismarck) announced she would not seek another term.
