Candidates emerge for House Majority Leader

Three of the Legislative floor leaders will be new in the 2023 Session.

There are leadership vacancies for House Majority Leader, Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader.

Current House Majority Leader Chet Pollert of Carrington is not seeking re-election to his House seat. And there are two GOP House members who are seeking the floor leader’s job. One is Rep. Mike Lefor (R-Dickinson), who has been in the North Dakota House since 2015). Lefor said he’s talking to a number of his caucus members about a potential agenda.

"I think one of the things that I'd like to see is a lot more information coming to our caucus," Lefor said. "We should bring in speakers, and experts.'

Lefor said that's what Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner (R-Dickinson) did for his caucus.

"When we're pushing the voting button, we understand what the issue is, and going the extra mile," Lefor said.

Also running is n Rep. Robin Weisz (R-Hurdsfield). He has been a House member since 1997.

"I've been doing this for a long time," Weisz said. "I have experience and the knowledge to continue the good leadership we've had in the past."

Weisz said he's been encouraged by some in the caucus, to make the jump to run for leader.

"I've also had some whol thought they would fit me for a straight-jacket for running, Weisz said. "But I like challenges — and this will certainly be a challenge."

Both Weisz and Lefor say this will be a “friendly” campaign for floor leader.

The Senate will choose both the Republican and Democratic floor leaders. The House Democratic leader is Rep. Josh Boschee (D-Fargo).
