Open enrollment begins for MNsure

MNsure is Minnesota's health insurance marketplace. This is the tenth year it's been in operation.

The open enrollment period for Minnesota’s health insurance marketplace begins today.

MNsure CEO Nate Clark says Minnesotans are encouraged to check out the plans, as federal eligibility requirements have changed. And he says more Minnesotans than ever may be able to take advantage of the marketplace, and experience a meaningful savings in their health insurance costs.

"These savings are real - eligible Minnesotans are projected to save about $560 a month or about $6,700 a year on average. This is money that goes straight into the consumer's pocket, and they can use it for other things that are important in their lives and not use it toward their health insurance premiums."

For benefits to begin on January 1, Minnesotans must apply by December 15. Minnesotans who apply after December 16 will begin their benefits on February 1.

Clark says Minnesotans should apply as soon as they can, and they can even get free assistance.

"Consumers can find an assister to work with by going to MNsure.org. There's a button on the front page that says "find free help," they can do a quick search, find someone in their neighborhood who can help them out. Appointments for that service fill up quickly - so don't put it off."
