Our Changing Forests ~ "Balkowitsch" Film

forestry.umn.edu

Monday, May 11, 2020 - Dr. Lee Frelich is the director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Forest Ecology. If the climate crisis goes unchecked, he says the boreal forests that currently soak up huge amounts of carbon dioxide could vanish completely. Taking with them a third of Minnesota’s native species of trees, flowers, birds and pollinators. He and a group of scientists are trying to understand what species will thrive, and they are starting to plant trees that will one day take the place of the ones native to the region. ~~~ With photographs archived at the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, Bismarck photographer Shane Balkowitsch has made a name for himself using an archaic style of photo processing known as wet plate photography. Bismarck filmmakers Greg DeSaye and Chelsy Ciavarella of Her, Him & The Fellas documented Shane for their new film, Balkowitsch, now streaming on Amazon. They spoke with Ashley Thornberg.
