Property tax, local government efficiency studies on tap

Lawmakers will conduct an in-depth study of local property taxes during the interim period before the 2015 Legislative session.

Sen. Dwight Cook R-Mandan) chairs the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee. And he’s been very involved in the property tax relief bills passed over the past several sessions.

"I don't know if I'm going to put any great expectations on it," said Cook. "It's a challenging road to go down. But if we can find some reform -- such as getting away from the use of 'mills' -- it would be great."

Cook says he's more excited for a study of local government efficiencies. He says North Dakota has the most government per capita in the US.

"It's a function of politics in North Dakota," said Cook. "People like their local government, but they don't want to pay for it."

The studies may lead to legislation for the 2015 session.
