Money in the Historical Society budget will shore up Double Ditch

Part of the budget for the state Historical Society will go toward addressing erosion problems at the Double Ditch Indian Village north of Bismarck.

"It is sacred ground," said Sen. Karen Krebsbach (R-Minot), a member of the conference committee dealing with that agency budget. "There's more than 1000 graves in that area. And since the flood of 2011, these bodies have been coming up. And they need to be interred."

Krebsbach  says $2.2 million will go toward preserving that site.

"We felt it was very important to stabilize this area, and to make sure we take care of it the way we should," said Krebsbach.

The overall budget for the Historical Society is $24.9 million.
