Moorhead police are investigating vandalism at the Moorhead Fargo Islamic Center Mosque.

The incident was reported to police at around 5:20 am Sunday. Police found hate messages directed toward the Islamic faith, and several areas of the building were spray painted.

"I've been pretty much involved in this community for many years, and I know this community very well. And that's why I'm shocked," said Sajid Ghauri, the mosque's advisor. "Knowing this community, this kind of action does not happen."

Ghauri said purchased the location two years ago, with the intent of building a mosque – and he has been raising money for it ever since.

People from the area came to the mosque, helping to clean up the vandalism.

"The community, just having the presence of the people, give us extra energy that we are strong together," Ghauri said. "This doesn't make us weaker -- it makes us stronger."

The mayors of Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and Dilworth issued a joint statement, saying they stand with Moorhead’s mayor in denouncing the incident. Moorhead mayor Shelly Carlson said hate does not have a home in the metro area.
