EPA carbon rule comment dedline looms

The deadline for comments on the new EPA carbon emissions rule is approaching.

The EPA extended the deadline until December first.

The rule would reduce carbon emissions 30 percent by the year 2030. In North Dakota, the reduction would be 11 percent.

Coal and power companies are weighing in – and some are planning to add comments to what they’ve already said.

"The EPA has said it expects to release the final rule in June," said Steve Van Dyke of the Lignite Energy Council. "Some people say, 'Well, if you're going to do that, then they're probably already working on the final rule.'"

Van Dyke calls that "problematic."

"People are providing some very good comments about the rule," said Van Dyke. "They explore the impact of the rule on electric ratepayers."

Van Dyke says he's hoping once the new rule is issued, there will be another comment period before the rule is finalized.

"This is a huge, complicated rule," said Van Dyke. "And to give just one comment period is not enough."
