'Time zone' bill stopped

Rep. Mike Lefor (R-Dickinson)

The House has decided now is not the right time to bring the entire state under the Central Time Zone.

The sponson -- Rep. Jim Kasper (R-Fargo) told the House having different time zones is hard on businesses.

"This is an opportunity to get the entire state into one time zone," Kasper said on the House floor. "It'll make it easier for business to do business."

But opponents didn’t think the time had come. And they said the ultimate decision on who sets the time is up to the federal government. Rep. Mike Lefor (R-Dickinson) said when the time comes, the recommendation should be made at the local level. And Lefor said there’s very little support for a time change.

"We are not interested in what oil companies' opinions are," Lefor said. "We are not interested in what industry's opinions are. I care about the people that live up and down the street in Dickinson, Beach and New England."

Lefor said from what he's hearing, there is very little support in his area to drop Mountain Time.

The final vote:  11 in favor, 81 against.
