Also joining us is Melissa Gjellstad, professor of Norwegian at UND. ~~~ NDSU history professor Tom Isern shares a Plains Folk essay, “Plover on Toast.” ~~~ The Big Read is coming to Dickinson. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest, 75 cities across the country are chosen each year to participate. Dickinson State University has developed over six weeks of programming and activities. Their event is called “The Things They Carried,” taking the name from Tim O’Brien’s classic book about the Vietnam War. O’Brien is one of the featured speakers. Today we visit with organizers Michelle Stevier-Johanson and Wynter Miller, and we hear an excerpt of our conversation with O’Brien from 2016.
