These days, pedestrian safety can sometimes be taken for granted. But what was it like walking in downtown Fargo before our current “Walk-Don’t Walk” signs were around?
On this date in 1941, Fargo Police Chief Charles Albright announced that the city’s new “Walk with the Green Light” signs were working well. Located at the intersections that had “automatic traffic control” lights, it reminded those downtown walkers when it was safe to cross.
What about the motorist who disregarded the rights of pedestrians?
Also on this date in 1941 the first traffic citation was issued to a young West Fargo man for disregarding the rights of pedestrians. After scattering the pedestrians trying to cross, the motorist spent 60 days in jail and was given a $50 fine.
