Maid Murdered

10/3/2009:

A sensational murder was reported in Grand Forks on this day in 1909. The victim, Ellen Fulton, was shot by her employer in a fit of jealous rage. Fulton, employed as a housekeeper in John Henry's lodging house, had been the object of Henry's attentions. Henry became enraged, however, when a man by the name of Brighteyes also began to pay the housekeeper "attentions." Henry began drinking early in the morning on October 2, and left work to purchase a revolver. Returning, he continued drinking until Fulton arrived for work. Accusing her of attempting to start a "disorderly house," Henry shot Fulton. She ran out into the street, but was shot four more times by her assailant. Witnesses gathered quickly to the scene, where Henry was found muttering about a disorderly house. Police arrested Henry as he walked away, still muttering, apparently seeking Brighteyes to try out his revolver a second time.
