Commercial and public radio stations in North Dakota began operating in 1922 when WDAY obtained its license in May of that year and KFJM began broadcasting at the University of North Dakota in October. A station also existed at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. For most stations, programming was irregular, with music and occasional crime reports.
On this date in 1923, WDAY of the Radio Equipment Corporation of Fargo announced its first regular schedule. Programs would be sent out Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings during the winter, and church services would be broadcast each Sunday at 10:30 AM. It was like obtaining a homestead to these radio pioneers, for in reality they were staking a claim on the air waves.
