White Slavers

8/3/2013:

In July of 1917, the State’s Attorney and the Bismarck Chief of Police raided a residence on the outskirts of the city. Complaints had been made that the small shack was a house of ill repute. The lawmen were at first surprised to find only a housekeeper in the home, but when the woman began soliciting them, the officers were quick to make an arrest and transport her to the city jail. They returned to find the owners, Joseph and Hughie Burrts, and their two young wives. After investigating, they discovered the two women were brought from Minnesota by the men to engage in prostitution. On this date in 1917, the two Mr. Burrts found themselves awaiting trial in the Bismarck jail.
