Bon Iver

Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile has dropped out of Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit taking place in DC this week, because of the participation former Department of Homeland Security Secretary, and overseer of President Donald Trump's controversial family separation policy at the southern border, Kirstjen Nielson. Longtime and influential UK post punk band WIRE is back in 2020 with a new album.  Aussie psych-rockers Tame Impala hint at a new album with strange video on their website homepage.  And Trey Anastasio honors Eau Claire, Wisconsin native Justin Vernon with a Bon Iver cover in his hometown last night.

Grab your hip beanie hats and sweaters, because Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner of The National are curating the debut Eaux Claires Hiver Fest, November 21-24 in his native Eau Claire, WI.  Polica and Ani DiFranco are among the artists slated to appear. The gathering and resulting collaborations will foreshadow the 2020 return of the larger Eaux Claires Festival, which went on hiatus last summer.  Twin Cities' Channy Lenneagh of Polica has announced a new album When We Stay Alive, which reflects the recent time she was bedbound due a brutal injury she suffered while clearing ice on her roof. And the never-been-washed cardigan Kurt Cobain wore during the taping of the classic MTV Unplugged in New York, is headed for auction and is expected to fetch up to $300,000!

Silver Jews and Purple Mountains frontman and revered indie rock poet David Berman has died at the age of 52 of, thus far, unrevealed causes.  He had battled depression and substance abuse in the past and once attempted suicide. Friends and fans like Stephen Malkmus, Neil Halstead and Kurt Vile have tweeted out loving tributes. Brian Wilson's longtime guitarist Nicky Wonder is dead at age 59. Wilson said in statement that Wonder, who fronted power pop band The Wondermints, passed away in his sleep and that he'd dedicate a show to him tonight. Willie Nelson has had to scrap the remaining dates of his current tour, save for his planned appearance at Farm Aid in East Troy, WI in September, because of breathing problems. And Bon Iver surprise-released their fourth, and what Justin Vernon called their most "adult" album, I,I on various digital platforms today. The physical release is still slated for August 30th.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie's "Space Oddity," toy maker Mattel has unvieled a Ziggy Stardust Barbie Doll! It features the character's iconic forehead emblem and striped space suit, the glam-rock legend used to sport when in full alter ego mode. Texas cult cowpunk legend Jon Dee Graham went into cardiac arrest on the 4th of July after performing a set a festival just outside Chicago. Amazingly, not even one week later, the 60-year-old former member of The Skunks and True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo rocked his regular Wednesday night gig at The Continental in Austin last night.  And Justin Vernon has announced Bon Iver's fourth album, I, I will come out August 30th. What he calls his most "adult" record,  features guest turns from Moses Sumney, Bruce Horsnby, Aaron & Bryce Dessner of The National and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak.

Rolling Stone

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver teams with one of his greatest musical influences, Bruce Hornsby for a new song. Calexico and Iron & Wine are back with their second collaboration and first since 2005. The hype machine is huge for Australian psych rockers Tame Impala, but their new euphoric, disco-driven, piano-rockin' track might just live up to it.
