A legislator from Kathryn is running for state treasurer.
Rep. Daniel Johnston (R-Kathryn) is finishing his first term in the House. The current treasurer – Kelly Schmidt –is not running for re-election. She has served in that office for 16 years.
"I have a desire to serve the people of North Dakota, and this opportunity opened up," Johnston said in an interview. "I wish Kelly (Schmidt) would run for another 16 years -- she's done such a good job. But I decided it was time to put up or shut up."
During an announcement rally in Bismarck, Johnston promised to be a good steward of taxpayer money.
"I consider the function of the treasurer to be incredibly critical for accountability and transparency," Johnston told the crowd. "My plan is not to reinvent the wheel, but build on the legacy of the treasurer's office."
Johnston is the first from either party to announce. It has been reported that Rep. Thomas Beadle (R-Fargo) is considering a run. During his speech, Johnston said he will respect the wishes of the state convention, to be held in Bismarck in April.
"I've been a delegate a number of times," Johnston said in an interview. "I know the work that goes in to a state convention. The delegates deserve the respect of the candidates."
Johnston did ask his supporters at the rally to become convention delegates.
