The Public Service Commission has approved MDU’s application for “public convenience and necessity” for a natural gas distribution system for Cass and Richland Counties.

WBI Energy – a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group – is planning to build 60 miles of natural gas pipeline from Mapleton to Wahpeton. The plan is to build a gas distribution system to serve Wahpeton and Kindred.

PSC Chairman Julie Fedorchak called it an exciting development for southeast North Dakota.

"A lot of the folks in that area currently have alternative heating sources, such as propane, coal, electricity and wood," Fedorchak said. "MDU anticipates signing 40 to 60 percent of the households, if they are granted a franchise for approval."

WBI says the pipeline will be completed in late 2024.
