A proposal to rename the J. Lloyd Stone House at UND has been put on hold.

It would be renamed for Kathleen and Hal Gershman, who recently donated $3 million to renovate the now vacant building into a student engagement center.

Stone had been the head of the UND alumni association.

The matter came before the Board of Higher Education’s Budget and Finance Committee Tuesday.

When asked if the Stone family was contacted, UND officials could not confirm it.

"My problem is, this is the third time we've taken generous donations or recognitions, given to people like the Stones, (Ray) Richards and (Ralph) Engelstad, and ticked them off from UND," said Board member Dan Traynor. "This is not acceptable."

Traynor made the motion to delay action until UND contacts the Stone family.

"I think this is completely tacky," Traynor said. "

The matter will likely come up at the next Budget and Finance Committee meeting.
