Mail Order Bride

She was friends with a real mail order bride, and she agreed to come marry her friend's farmer neighbor. She thought of a farmer as a prosperous man with plowmen and harvesters and herdsmen working for him. Instead she found a ramshackle homesteader with seven motherless children. You have to wonder that she stayed, but she did. The dresses she brought to go to the opera in got used by the children for playing dress-up.
