The president of Minot State University has tossed his hat in the ring for University of North Dakota president.

Steve Shirley has been at Minot State since July 2014. Before that, he spent six years as president of Valley City State.

UND search committee co-chair Dr. Hesham El-Rewini says even though the committee narrowed down the list of applicants it has chosen to conduct off-campus interviews, it agreed to leave the door open until noon Wednesday.  He says the committee will meet via phone Thursday or Friday to see if Shirley’s name should be added to that list.

"We have a very strong pool," said El-Rewini. "The people we have now are very strong. And adding more strong people to the pool will give us a better opportunity to have a successful search."

The search committee had earlier narrowed the list of candidates from 41 to 15.

Off-campus interviews will be conducted in Minneapolis.
