  • If you haven’t seen some shaggy mane mushrooms (Coprinus comatus) growing near your home lately, they probably will be soon. They are often seen popping up after a good rain in grassy areas such as parks, lawns, and the like during late summer and into fall, although they may grow at other times. They are one of North Dakota’s more common and interesting mushrooms.
  • One of the great promoters of western settlement in mid-nineteenth century was William Gilpin of Missouri — military officer, western explorer, first territorial governor of Colorado. In 1857 Gilpin was distressed about the still-prevailing notion that the country east of the Rockies was a Great American Desert.

  • Standing a few miles east of Richardton, North Dakota, is a modest conical hill with a lot of history. It’s called Young Man’s Butte. Several legends exist to the origin of the name. One of the most plausible came from Rain-in-the-Face, a Lakota Sioux, born near the Cheyenne River in present day South Dakota in 1835.
