  • 10/15/2005: Ann Brown Bolin was born on this date in 1893 and died in Cass County exactly 81 years later. She studied sculpture at the NDAC in Fargo and then got her masters degree from Columbia University, where she studied under Grant Wood, Malderelli and Alexander Archipenko.
  • 10/18/2005: Prohibition in North Dakota was in full force in 1910, and on this date of that year, the question in Minot was, “Who Stole the City’s Beer?” The story read, “When a number of blind pigs about the city were pulled recently, the amber fluid was confiscated and stored away in the archives of the city hall as evidence. It was placed under lock and key and Chief Billy Bateman given the key. Another key was left in the desk of the Sergeant.
  • 11/4/2005: According to the U.S. Department of Defense, North Dakota has a disproportionate number of men and women serving in Iraq – in fact, it has the highest per capita participation of any state in the Nation. One year ago today, Specialist Cody Wentz, of Williston, became the state’s 9th casualty. He was 21.
  • 11/5/2005: On this date in 1968, William Guy became the first governor in the state’s history to be elected to a fourth term.
  • 11/6/2005: In 1922, this was Edsel Ford’s 29th birthday. He and his wife, Eleanor, were in Fargo on business, and to celebrate the occasion, the Fargo Commercial Club treated Mr. and Mrs. Ford to a duck dinner given in their honor.
  • 11/29/2005: If you’re a regular listener of our program, you’ve heard a number of stories related to the ND 164th Infantry Regiment. Today’s story is about a veteran of the 164th who, like others, came home a war hero. But unlike others, Verne Miller took a drastically wrong turn. In fact, he became one of the most notorious figures in gangland history.

  • 12/3/2005: Burleigh F. Spaulding was born in Vermont on this date in 1853. He was a congressman from North Dakota from 1899 to 1905 and later served on the ND Supreme Court.
  • 12/8/2005: The First National Bank of Wilton was held-up by three armed men on this date in 1931. The heist was the sixth attempted bank robbery of the year for the area, but, the Wilton News added, “Robberies this year have not been profitable for the bank bandits.”
