  • 2/25/2007: The current official North Dakota highway map lists the population of Langdon, county seat of Cavalier County, as two thousand one hundred and one.
  • 2/26/2007: The North Dakota Geological Survey was established on this date, February 26th, 1895, and was originally headed by a geology professor from the University of North Dakota who was the ex-officio State Geologist.
  • 3/2/2007: The Territory of Dakota, better known today as Dakota Territory, was created by an act of Congress on this day in 1861. The territory was carved out of Minnesota and Nebraska Territories, and included present-day North and South Dakota, and parts of Wyoming and Montana. Before this time, the area had fallen under several different names and claims by the United States government.

  • 11/21/2006: Tom McGoey was a man of firsts. He was the first North Dakota aviator, built the first North Dakota airplane, and would later be the first aviator in several cities, including Duluth. Today in 1938, the state was celebrating the life of the accomplished aviator at his funeral held in Grand Forks. Tom McGoey had died at the age of 61 on November 17, 1938, but his legacy continued in the minds of North Dakotans who had witnessed his aerial feats.
  • 11/23/2006: Football season in North Dakota ended recently, with four teams earning the crown in their own separate divisions. In the past, however, there was only one champion in the state, and on this day in 1917, the Williston Coyotes, under the direction of Coach Joe Cutting, ran away with the state title.
  • 11/28/2006: Though completely landlocked, North Dakota is noted for having at least two ships named for the state or for a North Dakota city.
  • 12/7/2006: Students are always looking for cheap accommodation while going to school, but the University of North Dakota was taking it to a whole new level. On this day in 1933, the Leader reported that university officials had established a new innovative dormitory for students struggling through the Depression.
  • 12/10/2006: Plans were in the making to create a gift from North Dakota to Norway on this day in 1913.
  • 12/15/2006: On this date in 1914, the Socialist party in North Dakota fired A.C. Townley and three of its organizers. Though it may have seemed like a very unfortunate time for Townley, it later resulted in North Dakota's Nonpartisan League.
