5/22/2015: Today’s story has its roots—so to speak—in the subtropics that covered most of North Dakota 60-million years ago. It was the Paleocene Epoch, during which time palm trees, redwood trees, sycamores, magnolia and bald cypress trees provided habitat for turtles, crocodiles, champsosaurs, alligators and many other exotic animals.

5/29/2015: North Dakotans are familiar with the danger posed by tornados. The state ranks nineteenth in the number of tornados and twenty-sixth in the number of deaths. June and July are the primary months for tornadoes. The earliest in North Dakota was March 26, 2006 and the latest was November 1, 2000.

6/19/2015: In 1904, Charles J. Glidden, a retired, wealthy telephone businessman and automobile enthusiast, took part in an automobile run from New York to St. Louis, sponsored by the American Automobile Association. Wishing such tours to become an annual event, Glidden donated a $2,000 silver trophy. In doing so, he became a part of automobile history.

5/20/2014: On this date in 1914, John Sutherland Sinclair died in Los Angeles, where, for three years, he had lived quietly at the Hotel Balboa. At the time of his burial at Forest Lawn, only three Californians knew who he really was. The other few people who knew his true identity were from North Dakota, where Sinclair lived from 1884 to 1905.

5/22/2014: It was 1889, and the May 14thelection was over and the Republicans had elected 56 out of the 75 delegates. A late spring storm, welcomed for the much needed moisture, dumped from three to six inches of snow across most of the northern territory, which resulted in a light turnout of voters. That and the election provision in the Omnibus Bill allowing voters to mark their ballot for only two of the three candidates almost assured the Democrats of one third of the delegates.

6/3/2014: Who could ever resist loving Teddy Bears? Who could resist the story of Teddy Bears, tugging on your heartstrings? Apparently, very few would ever WANT to resist the irresistible.

6/9/2014: Most of the news in the Fargo Forum of June 9, 1943 related to the war. There were stories about the fighting and a list of local servicemen being held as prisoners of war.

6/13/2014: When Great Britain granted independence to Canada in 1867, the new Canadian government decided it had to bring law and order to the vast Canadian west, so the North West Mounted Police Act was passed on May 20, 1873.

6/19/2014: As we grow older, we see more clearly how fragile human life can be. Perhaps nowhere is this fragility more readily apparent than in the realm of mental health.

6/27/2014: It's just not North Dakota if there isn't any weather-related news. After all, an agriculture-heavy area relies on the elements to aid in the well-being of the crops. Sometimes the weather is good...sometimes it's not.
