Geneva Schow
7/16/2014: Geneva Schow's father, Martin Schow, rebuilt a broken-down airplane near Regent, North Dakota, during the 1920s. Soaring through the North Dakota skies with her father gave young Geneva her first taste of flight. The plane, dubbed "Sakakawea" by her father, was also Geneva's first piloting experience as a teenager during the 1930s.
Train Robbery
7/24/2014: In July of 1911, an overnight trip took a downward turn when a Northern Pacific train was held up. It occurred as the train passed through Tower City; three men described as being of medium height and wearing polka-dot handkerchiefs, went through the sleeper cars of the train and systematically woke up all the passengers, held them at pistol-point and robbed them of whatever they could.
Canadian Quarantine
7/31/2014: In early June of 1892, the Canadian Pacific steamer Empress of Japan sailed up the Portage Inlet and into the harbor of Victoria, British Columbia. The ship had sailed east from Japan, transporting mail and cargo. Once docked, around 150 Chinese and Japanese crew members disembarked, anxious to explore the city. One of the main attractions Victoria held for the sailors was Dupont Street, where the city’s prostitutes plied their trade. Two weeks later, after the Empress had departed, Victorians began to drop. Smallpox had come to their city.
Out of Money
8/15/2014: August 15, 1889 marked the forty-third day of the Constitutional Convention, and great strides had been made in cementing a constitution for the State of North Dakota.
Lights in the Sky
8/26/2014: North Dakota has a close connection to UFO sightings. In 1947, private pilot Kenneth Arnold, a North Dakota native, made the first official UFO report, saying he spotted a string of nine, shiny "Unidentified flying objects" objects flying past "Mount Rainier" in Washington State. The very next year, a Fargo pilot reported a sighting. The Air Force investigated, but explained that the UFO was actually a weather balloon. In March of 1967, a police officer reported a UFO near Mohall and Velva. In 1968, a UFO was observed near Minot Air Force Base. It was seen by at least twenty people and was observed for more than three hours.
The Grand Forks Baseball Team
9/1/2014: In the year 1900, the Grand Forks baseball team became North Dakota champions. They won this great honor by earning the best record in the state, winning 23 games and losing just three, and also by defeating the best teams in the region.
The Calm Before the Storm
9/2/2014: There was big news in the Grand Forks Herald on this date in 1882. The city was preparing for an influx of territorial delegates for the Republican Convention. The newspaper called it the calm before the storm. The paper predicted a dull day that would soon be followed by a week of excitement.
The University of North Dakota
9/8/2014: The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. In 1883, the Territorial Legislature passed a bill that called for locating the university in Grand Forks. The University included only a few acres of land. Located two miles outside Grand Forks, it was surrounded by farms and fields.
Political Maelstrom
9/9/2014: Politics reigned supreme this week in 1889. The election was only three weeks away. One of the decisions to be made by each party was the choice of the three candidates for the US Congress.
Patriot Day
9/11/2014: Any adult alive on September 11, 2001 probably remembers where they were when the Twin Towers fell. New York City may seem very far away from North Dakota. But North Dakotans were directly affected by the event.
