Pin in the Throat
1/12/2008: If you think getting a frog in your throat is annoying, imagine getting a pin caught in your throat! That happened to one little boy in 1933.
Blooming with Life
1/14/2008: When thinking of North Dakota, you don't think of the sunny southern hemisphere, or of oceans or mountains, for obvious reasons. However, through funds collected by the Mountrail county's 4-H and Homemakers groups, several young men from that region were able to travel abroad and make connections to such places.
Steamboat Park
1/16/2008: A stroll along River Road next to the Missouri River in Bismarck presents walkers with an interesting lesson in North Dakota history. One of the stops is Steamboat Park, a site that was acquired by the State Historical Society of North Dakota on this day, January 16, 1941.
Glenda Spelhaug
1/22/2008: "Today, January 22 marks the 64th anniversary of the start of the World War Two battle at Anzio. During the invasion of Italy, the Allies planned a second landing behind German lines at the port city southwest of Rome. Although the Allied forces were eventually able to break the German defenses and move northward to Rome, it took four months of fierce fighting during which Allied forces suffered 59,000 casualties.
More Oddities from Ward
1/23/2008: If you were listening on January 9, you heard the summaries of several strange stories from “the wilds of Ward County.” On this date, another strange story, from Velva, was published in the Minot Weekly Optic in 1908.
Ramsey County
1/25/2008: Named after Alexander Ramsey, the US Senator from Minnesota, Ramsey County was established in January 1873 by the Dakota Territorial legislature. The Ramsey County government was organized ten years later on this day, January 25, 1883.
Avard Fairbank’s Dodge Ram
1/27/2008: Standing at the entrance of the North Dakota State Capitol Complex is a sculpture titled “The Pioneer Family.” The mother cradles a baby while the father looks forward, holding son and wife close. The boy's left hand rests on a wagon wheel, a symbol for civilization on the march.
Surprise attack
1/26/2008: The McKenzie Gazette reported on this day that in 1911, an “attack” was made on the Golden West Hotel.
Valley City State University
1/28/2008: Earlier this month we learned how Fargo and Valley City both fought for the agricultural college which evolved into North Dakota State University. Valley City began the legislative battle this month in 1889 when Hugh McDonald, a Territorial Councilman from Valley City introduced legislation to the Territorial Legislature calling for an agricultural college to be built in Valley City. Fargo quickly fired back and Smith Stimmel of Cass County, former body guard of Abraham Lincoln turned Territorial Councilman, submitted legislation calling for an Agricultural College in Fargo. The battle went back and forth, but eventually Fargo’s leaders suggested working together to increase both communities’ chances of securing an educational institution. Understanding the advantage of gaining Fargo’s support, Valley City’s citizens dropped their claims for the agricultural college and requested the next best thing, a normal, or teachers’ school.
Dakota Protest
2/6/2008: In 1904 on this day, at 1:05 to the minute, the steamship "Dakota" was launched in New London, Connecticut. It was proclaimed to be the "largest steamship in the world."
