The Short Life of Energy, Part 1
7/27/2013: On this date in 1910, a townsite with an unusual name was in the works. Located approximately 14 miles west of Underwood along the banks of the Missouri, it was not the first time the land was examined.
Nodak to Nuremberg
7/29/2013: A verdict overseen by North Dakota Supreme Court Judge James Morris was released on this date in 1948, in Nuremberg, Germany. The trial was Tribunal 6, one of the twelve Nuremberg Trials in which Nazi war criminals were held accountable foratrocities committed during the course of World War II. Morris himself was selected by President Harry Truman to sit on a panel of four judges responsible for overseeing the tribunal.
Fears of Runaway Horses, 1913
7/30/2013: Common fears in the past included the fear of runaway horses. In the horse-and-buggy era, accidents caused by runaways were about as common as auto accidents today.
Stepping on a Nail
7/31/2013: Stepping on a rusty nail was one of the worst fears of children raised on farms. A puncture wound in the foot brought not only pain, it also brought germs from the soil into the bloodstream. Adults also feared stepping on a nail because of the danger of contracting tetanus, known in the past as the dreaded lockjaw.

8/4/2013: On the afternoon of August 4, 1920, the telephone rang in the Bismarck home of Mrs. Frank McCormick. The caller had terrible news: Mrs. McCormick's young son Emmett had been hit by a train and killed.
Coyote or Collie?
8/5/2013: Since 2010, North Dakota’s coyote population has been on the rise. In 2011, the North Dakota legislature considered a bill to established a one hundred dollar bounty on the animals. The state has a history of offering bounties on the pesky predators, offering the earliest coyote bounty in 1896. However, the efficacy and logic behind such bounties remains hotly debated, especially given some problems bounties have caused.
Loren Douglas Hagen
8/7/2013: Even in retrospect, the sad havoc of Vietnam War history often remains unclear. And the story of Loren Douglas Hagen, who died on a bloodied hilltop in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on this date in 1971, was a puzzling mystery at that time.
Stole Car And Kids
8/10/2013: A shady fellow found an unattended car on this date in 1925 and took it for a joy ride. Unfortunately, the car thief hadn't noticed the two passengers in back.
Strontium-90 Found in Cow’s Milk in North Dakota
8/16/2013: In 1957, Dr. Albert Schweitzer warned the world about the dangers of nuclear fallout from atomic-bomb testing. The humanitarian told of “radioactive particles” that “remained in the air” after nuclear-weapon explosions. Schweitzer said radioactive fallout drifted down to earth, “brought down by rain, snow, mist and dew little by little,” and got into the human body through contaminated food and water.
