6/16/2004: Yesterday, we began the story of Phil Jackson, who was born in 1945 in Deer Lodge, MT, and grew up in Williston. He got his big break as an NBA coach in 1988, during his stint as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls. Soon after, he was named head coach, and led the Bulls to 6 NBA championships in 9 years – the first time any team twice won three consecutive titles.

Germans Left Behind
10/16/2003: On yesterday’s program, we discussed the first mass migration of Germans as they poured into Russia at the invitation of Catherine the Great. By the late 1800s, Catherine was dead, Germany and Russia had become enemies and German Russians were being drafted into the military to fight their German kinsman. This marked the beginning of the second mass migration of Germans – this time from Russia to the United States, with a very large number of them settling in central and southwestern North Dakota.

10/19/2003: On Oct. 19th, 1932, a surprise ice storm in North Dakota broke down 12,360 poles of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and caused $250,000 worth of damage to its lines.

10/23/2003: Seventy-one years ago today, Winnie Ruth Judd surrendered to police in Los Angeles after the remains of two women, one from North Dakota, were found in her traveling trunks.
