By now, children are giving hints of Christmas wishes, but on this day in 1921, the postmaster had his own wish. With Christmas approaching, the post office pushed its slogan, “Shop Early, Mail Early.” Postmaster General Hays tried to reach everyone with the message, but especially urged children to be postmaster’s little helpers. “Think of what it means to be Santa,” wrote Hays, “and to deliver Christmas parcels to every family in this country within a few days without disappointment. It can be done, and we’re going to do it [with your help].”
The letter instructed children on properly addressing packages and using proper envelopes and postage. But just in case the lengthy letter and instructions weren’t enough, he added: “P.S. Don’t forget to mail Christmas packages this week.”
